Introduction to my new blog team

Image
Greetings everyone. I'd like to introduce Joey (right) and Roy (middle) to you. They are new on my team starting last Fall. We will feed the latest news to you.

Joey is from Wisconsin but has lived in Hawaii for nearly 20 years. She lived the first 5 years on Oahu and than for 14 years in Kailua Kona. She loves ASL but also knitting. She wants to support the ASL community.

Roy has lived for 5 years in Waikoloa but will move this month back to his home state, Alaska. He is originally from South Carolina. Hiking, swimming and reading are his hobbies. Also, he wants to support the ASL community.

We welcome the volunteer assistance of anyone who would like to further our goals of providing the best information possible to the deaf community of Hawaií.

The 19th Annual Day at the Capitol 2019

Image
The 19th Annual Day at the Capitol
On Thursday, March 7, 2019, Linda Sykora, Ronald McBride and Thijs van den Berg arrived at about 8:30am at the Hawaii State Capitol in Honolulu. Linda is president of the Big Island Deaf Club and Ronald vice president. I am social media specialist of the Big Island Deaf Club. The purpose of visiting our state legislators and advocate was to discuss the needs of the deaf community (dental, housing, transportation, and jobs).

Once at the Capitol Auditorium Lobby, my Big Island group suggested that we greet Governor Ige before the Opening Ceremonies. We took the elevator to the fifth floor of the Capitol. In the Governor's ceremonial Room, Governor Ige greeted visiting neighbor island groups; Kauai, Maui and our island. We took a lot of photos. After visiting this beautiful room, we went back to the Capitol Auditorium Lobby for the Opening Ceremonies. Daintry Bartoldus (Executive Administrator), Bruce S. Anderson (Director of Health), Debbra Jackson…

TRANSCRIPT FROM ASL VIDEO;
Hello everyone, my name is Thijs and I got a tips from my friend about a job. I want to share with you.

Looking for a job? Maybe looking for a different job?

 Two websites that will help you make this change are: Hire Abilities Hawaii (http://www.hireabilitieshawaii.org) and USA Jobs (https://www.usajobs.gov).

 The Hire Abilities Hawaii website (http://www.hireabilitieshawaii.org) is a great place to find employment resources. Here you can search for a career, job training and career assessment. There is also information to help start a business of your own and disabilities services providers. This site has links to three other helpful websites. The Hire Net Hawaii site (www.hirenethawaii.com) is an excellent place to start your search for a job. You can also create your resume, find career information and information on education and training. To get one-on-one help, go to the American Job Center on the Big Island. Big Island Interpreters

Image
On the first Saturday of November, the Big Island Deaf Club celebrated a Thanksgivings Feast at the pavilion in Laupahoehoe Point. Also, a group of ASL interpreters instead of just individuals (as often), visited and greeted the Big Island Deaf Club's Saturday gathering. Mary Love, Helle, Michael, Carrie and Dano are a group of freelance American Sign Language/ English interpreters collaborating on the Big Island to provide services. They introduced themselves because a few of them are new to the local deaf community. For the first time in the history this Fall, the interpreters developed their own Facebook page (Big Island Interpreters) and their own website www.bigislandinterpreters.com. Their goal is to promote ASL interpreted events and provide equal access to the Deaf community of Hawaii Island.
It was a great time to learn more about them. The Thanksgiving potluck meal was also tasty. The Big Island now has a stronger ASL heritage.

Save the date on February 2, 2019
